2007 SCYSA Publix
Parent of the Year Award
All too often parents get involved in their own child’s
activities and feel overwhelmed by the amount of work
and energy it takes to keep them safe, happy and constantly
learning about the ethics and values behind what it is
to become a successful person in life. In the case of
a soccer family, there’s also the essential elements of
training and acquisition of skill sets that will allow
a player to thrive on the pitch. Then there’s this matter
of the field itself that has to be maintained as well
as the administration and management of a Club to get
the players registered, organized and playing.
Neil Veloso does it all.

Neil Veloso does play favorites, however.
His three young children, Josh, Andrew and Ben, drive
his enthusiasm for the game while this passion he shares
for them spreads to the community as a whole. Neil has
coached teams, served on soccer boards, lined fields and
sold concessions. He’s the first to arrive and open the
gates and the one who usually locks them at the end of
the day. Balancing his schedule as a volunteer with that
of his family responsibilities means that he constantly
puts others before himself.
Neil’s energy and enthusiasm are a rare
quality today. In 1998 Neil was recognized for his service
at the North Charleston Recreation Department where he
was the soccer volunteer of the year. As a former President
of Summerville Soccer Club, Neil continues to apply his
experience and energy by bringing his administrative skills
to the community. He serves in the capacity of Coastal
District Cups & Games Directory, President of Low
Country Youth Soccer Association, the DOC for North Charleston
Soccer Club and Vice President of Bridge FA.
SC Youth Soccer needs dedicated volunteers
like him in our organization, and our organization is
privileged to name him the 2007 Publix Parent of the Year.
